Getting the Most out of Your Chiropractic Adjustment

Chiropractic care can do wonders, and patients often ask me what they can do to make the most of the adjustment. In my experience as a doctor of chiropractic, both getting and giving adjustments and monitoring the effects, I have a few thoughts I'd like to share.

What to Avoid to Get the Most out of Your Chiropractic Adjustment

There are likely stretches you can do to help, but it's much more about avoiding certain things and setting yourself up for success. Regarding success in chiropractic, the best case scenario is the patient preparing properly, the doctor making the right adjustments correctly, the patient taking the adjustments well, and supporting the adjustment over the following days and weeks.

From the patient's perspective, it's pre-, during, and post-adjustment or how well you "hold" your adjustment.

Chiropractic Pre-Adjustment Preparation

Pre-adjustment preparations go for at least a few hours before if not a day or days.

  • Think of what you would like to focus on in the adjustment. This will help you track improvement, and having a prepared thought or statement will help get your chiropractor up to speed faster.

  • Listen to calming music on your drive, or at least not the aggressive high-tempo tunes, which have a different place.

  • Avoid reading the news or power-cramming emails in the waiting room. If you are early to the adjustment, take the time for yourself to breathe and relax.

  • No tobacco. Tobacco puts everything on edge. You will chemically be in fight or flight mode, making receiving much harder.

  • Limit coffee. It has similar effects as nicotine.

During Your Chiropractic Adjustment

To best receive the adjustment, remember that the chiropractor does most of the work, but it is a co-creative process.

  • Breathe and try to relax. Focusing on the breath and breath rhythm during an adjustment can really help. It can inform the chiropractor's decision-making process, and exhaling for a specific move can make it more successful.

  • Some feedback is helpful but can also interrupt the provider's analysis process. We know that one adjustment can shift tension to a different body part; it's part of what we're trained to do. If, however, your complaint area hasn't been addressed by the end of the visit, then it's your responsibility to bring it up.

  • Try not to get too fixated on a thought. If you feel comfortable, then share the thought. Sometimes, getting an idea out past the lips can help you move past it. If this is the case, do it, but remember, we're not therapists.

  • Try not to drift off. Adjustments can be very calming and often bring more balance to the sympathetic (fight or flight) or equal but lesser-known para-sympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system. If you do find you've drifted off, it's not a big deal; try to catch up with the adjustment flow.

Post-Adjustment Procedures: The First 24 Hours Are the Most Important

  • Take a break: Do not immediately return to cramming emails, which can cause stress. It would be better to schedule the adjustment at the end of the day!

  • Avoid heavy lifting: You probably feel good, and now seems like an ideal time to move that bathtub, but heavy lifting can pull an adjustment out.

  • Avoid alcohol and drugs, at least for the first day. Maybe you're using chiropractic as a hangover cure, which is a good idea, but any alcohol consumption shortly after the adjustment is chemical stress and will shorten the positive effects of chiropractic.

  • Don't do a heavy workout: If you really need to get in the gym the same day as an adjustment, it's best to do it a few hours before your treatment so you can shower and relax.

  • Take the rest of the day to rest: The best thing you can do is incorporate. Often, a walk in the fresh air is best.

  • Don't go bowling for 5 hours straight: I seriously had a person come in once and complain that he didn't even hold his adjustment for 24 hours. Upon further questioning, it turned out he went to bowling night immediately after the adjustment and played for five hours. While that seems obvious from here, even rock climbing or a long bike ride immediately after isn't the best choice.
